1300 Mobilized to Serve!

Posted: January 19, 2010

Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.
Dr. Martin Luther King

On Monday, January 18th, Portland Leadership Foundation was a part of commencing a rally hosted by Concordia University. With over 1300 students present, the morning rally included a performance by the local King Elementary School Choir, a keynote speech delivered by Pastor Mark Strong of Life Change Christian Center, and finished with local pastor Emmett Wheatfall delivering Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Following the rally, students were transported by bus to one of 50 project sites around Portland. The projects have were planned with the assistance of Hands On Greater Portland, Portland Leadership Foundation, and Oregon Campus Compact. The various projects included refurbishing schools, churches and community centers. Many community organizations also utilized the day to sign up mentors and tutors for the coming year and encouraged young people to make a pledge of non-violence.

In addition to Portland Leadership Foundation, partners involved in this day of service included, Concordia University, George Fox University, Hands On Greater Portland, Lewis and Clark College, Linfield College, Mt. Make it a Day On... Not a Day Off!
During the 1950s and ’60s, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized the power of service to strengthen communities and achieve common goals. Initiated by Congress in 1994, King Day of Service builds on that legacy by transforming the federal holiday honoring Dr. King into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The aim is to make the holiday a day ON, where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned.

Posted: December 1, 2009

Many thanks to the 15 readers who have spent the last two weeks reading every Act Six application. We have announced our 40 Semi-Finalists and each student is currently planning for Phase II of the Act Six Selection Process. Phase II consists of a two-day interview on campus for each track of Act Six. We are confident that this years class of Semi-Finalists is stronger than ever!

Direct Four-Year Track: December 1-2 at George Fox University
Urban Service Track: December 3-4 at Warner Pacific College

We hope to have our 20 scholars selected by the Monday, December 7th. This is the next generation of leadership, and we look forward to awarding them over $2.1 million as an early Christmas present!

Phase I Selection Committee Meeting

Posted: November 2, 2009

As you read this there are 15 people from incredibly diverse backgrounds who are reading each and every Act Six application submitted two weeks ago. We went through 27 reams of paper and met with each committee last week to handout the binders.

Each application will be assessed through a rubric, and we will meet again to determine which 20 applicants for each program will move on to Phase II.

Phase I Selection Meeting Dates:

Direct Four-Year Track: November 12th, 6:00-9:00pm
Urban Service Track: November 16th, 5:00-8:00pm

The Act Six Process

Posted: October 24, 2009

Over the last three days, we've had over 100 applications come through our office for the Act Six Leadership and Scholarship Initiative. We'll make over 15,000 copies in the next week in preparation for our two-phase selection process.

We'll select 20 Semi-Finalists for both the Direct Four-Year Track and the Urban Service Track. From there, all students will go to each campus for a series of interviews, assessments, and group process work. After this phase is completed, we'll meet for hours on end.

The final result will be 20 scholars selected to receive $2.1 million.

We are incredibly intentional about the process because we are incredibly focused on building leaders for the future.

United Demonstration Project

Posted: October 20, 2009

The United Demonstration Project is much more than a meeting. Yes, we meet every two weeks corporately, but at any given time, adults and students are meeting in different locations all over this city. We mentor kids in three different venues: one-on-one, small group meetings, and our Sunday Family Meetings.

Our next Family Meeting is this Sunday night, October 25th from 6:30-8:00pm. Chad Reeves--our friend, an incredible husband and father, excellent teacher and basketball coach at David Douglas High School, and Young Life leader extraordinaire will be sharing...

We just wanted you to know.

PLF welcomes Warner Pacific College to the Act Six Initiative!

Posted: September 18, 2009

Portland Leadership Foundation is proud to announce the addition of Warner Pacific College as a partner in the innovative Act Six Urban Service Track.

Warner Pacific is an urban Christ-centered four-year liberal arts college located in the heart of Portland. "I believe Warner Pacific is ideally situated to partner with Act Six to provide Christian higher education that will prepare students to lead and serve in our city and the world. I am excited about this opportunity to encourage students in their personal, spiritual, and intellectual growth as they respond to God's calling for their lives," says Dr. Andrea Cook,
Warner Pacific president.

Warner Pacific joins George Fox University University to become the second college partner working with Portland Leadership Foundation to identify and equip emerging urban leaders in the Portland metro area. The new partnership will double the number of Act Six scholarships available to Portland students.

The Act Six Urban Service Track builds on the original direct four year Act Six model and provides a unique opportunity for scholars to gain two years of street-level urban service experience with local non-profits in Portland while living at home and earning an associate's degree at Portland Community College (PCC). Scholars then bring their leadership to the Warner Pacific College campus for two years as they complete their bachelor's degree.

Research highlights opportunity to collaborate

Posted: September 17, 2009

This summer we hired 10 interns to research the non-profit community in the City of Portland. In a cooperative with Mission Increase Foundation and Luis Palau Association, our hope is to develop a database highlighting what is happening in the non-profit community. The action plan is to use this information to promote collaboration and identify opportunities to help non-profits take their good intentions and produce more effective outcomes. We will publish our findings on this site soon!
